Tongariro is by far the most popular national park in the North Island, attracting tens of thousands of skiers, walkers and trampers every year. The park centres around three active volcanoes: Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu, all of which are considered by local Maori to be sacred ancestors. In the chief of the local iwi Ngati [ ].   The title of the article should be “when a bit of experience is a dangerous thing“.While there is always the opportunity for something to go wrong with the most experience people on the most well-planned activities, a rather common thread is ‘enough experience to be dangerous’ where true experience might dictate suppressing the reflex and letting a ski/pack/whatever slide to either be.

The project involves the conversion of an old water raceway into a stretch of fast flowing river complete with rocks and gravel to mimic a natural stream bed. Raceway conversion Young whio need to develop the strength to tackle fast flowing rivers which will be their home in the wild, and this new facility will act as their gymnasium. The Crossing is located within the Tongariro National Park (TNP), situated in the central North Island, south of Lake Taupo. The Crossing route is located on Mount Tongariro, between the lower Mangatepopo Valley and the end of Ketetahi Road, both accessed from State Highway The Crossing has a unique set of very high natural, cultural and.

POWER SCHEME The Tongariro Power Scheme (“TPS”) is located in the headwaters of four major catchments, namely the Whanganui, Whangaehu, Moawhango, and Tongariro Catchments. The majority of water is sourced from the Kaimanawa Ranges and the central North Island volcanoes; Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe. Tongariro Geology. The Tongariro National Park has had a violent past and was formed by multitude of eruptions from at least six different cones. The oldest lava started flowing about , years ago, near what is now the Tama Lakes on the southern flanks of Mt Ngauruhoe. The eruptions continued until the Ice Age, as the ice retreated, it.

The Tongariro Power Scheme is a MW hydroelectricity scheme in the central North Island of New scheme is currently operated by electricity generation company Genesis Energy. The scheme takes water from tributaries of the Rangitikei, Whangaehu, Whanganui, and Tongariro rivers, which drain a 2,square-kilometre (1, sq mi) area covering Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, Tongariro Commission date: (Tokaanu), (Rangipo), (Mangaio).

The Waikato River drains 13% of the North Island. It rises in the Central Volcanic Plateau; the headwaters, including the Tongariro R., drain into oligotrophic Lake Taupo, important for fishing and holidaying.

The river flows north from Taupo for km to the sea near Auckland. Human impacts on the river system have been extensive, primarily dating from European colonisation begun in the by: Project Tongariro Mahi Aroha, Turangi, New Zealand.

Project Tongariro (legal name Tongariro Natural History Society) was originally formed after four National Park rangers were killed in helicopter crash in December A memorial fund was established thanks to two family bequests says Paul and a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the former Lands and Survey department.

The Tongariro Power Development was an ambitious scheme in the early s. It diverted the headwaters of several rivers through tunnels and canals, so that they flowed through the Tokaanu power station and into Lake Taupō.

From there the water flowed though a series of dams along the Waikato River. Project Tongariro and Department of Conservation publish an annual journal detailing activity undertaken in World Heritage Tongariro National Park, New Zealand.

The Tongariro Power Scheme has a MW generation capacity, comprises of three hydro power stations and a catchment area of more than km2.

The river was developed in multiple stages. The Waitaki dam was built first, without earthmoving machinery, followed by the development of the Aviemore Dam on Lake Aviemore and Benmore Dam on Lake Benmore.

Lake Pukaki was initially dammed at this stage to provide storage and flow control. A small station was also installed on Lake Tekapo, but although it has a small dam to raise the pre.
